Post-Hurricanes

This photo doesn't adequately show the destruction of trees following the two hurricanes that blew through Sarasota, Florida, but it gives some reference point.

The tapestry of the landscape has been altered. Piles of debris line the streets. There is less shade and more sunlight entering homes and buildings. After dark, more interior lights shine, once blocked by trees.

People, myself included, are so grateful the destruction to homes and buildings wasn't more widespread. The line crewman, roofers, and clean up crews are amazing. It could have been worse. Miracles abound. One friend lost eleven trees on their property, yet not one of their many statues collected from India and Bali was broken. How is that possible?

People are having difficulty focusing, reading, even watching television. The days of the week are confused. Sleep can fluctuate between too much and not enough.

It's like a collision between gratitude for what remains and the enormous support, and sadness for what is changed and gone. So many feelings and thoughts. You could call it an expereince of both collective and individual grief.
